World Interaction Design Day

The Interaction Design Association (IxDA) is a member-supported organization dedicated to the discipline of interaction design. Since its launch in 2003, IxDA has grown into a global network of more than 100,000 individuals and over 173 local groups, focusing on interaction design issues for the practitioner, no matter their level of experience.

World Interaction Design Day (#IxDD) is an annual event where we come together as a united global community to show how interaction design improves the human condition. Our aim is to have a positive, long-lasting impact.

World Interaction Design Day is back for the second year with the theme of Trust and Responsibility.

World Interaction Design Day - IxDA Atlanta

IxDA NYC and Adobe are excited to present our inaugural World Interaction Design Day. We’ll be talking about diversity and inclusion, and how actively working to design inclusively at all levels can help you effect change on an individual, systemic, and organizational level.
Our speakers will share stories of designing accessible voice interfaces, designing inclusively for deaf people, and about designing an organizational culture that fosters a feeling of belonging.

Designing for One, Stories from BBC2’s The Big Life Fix
John Anderson, Smart Design
Since we find it so easy to communicate with one another, you could assume that crafting a conversational user interface would be an innate skill for designers. But the truth is, there are dozens of intricacies that come with designing for voice. Technology trailblazer John Anderson recently collaborated with a team of inventors for BBC2 television show, The Big Life Fix, looking to create new and life-changing solutions for people in need. John will share his learnings in experimenting, prototyping and designing an accessible solution to navigate voice technology for a woman living with severe, progressive Multiple Sclerosis. He’ll uncover the obstacles in coding complex conversations through creating a personalized ‘accessibility jacket’ for Amazon Alexa, and the incredibly powerful outcomes that can be created with emerging technologies when you go deep to design for one extreme user.

Designing for Deaf People, for Everyone Actually
Marie van Driessche, ABN AMRO Bank
Marie van Driessche is a Dutch designer from Amsterdam. Being a designer, she is fascinated by how people interact with digital products and each other. Currently she works at ABN AMRO Bank as interaction designer.
Marie has a BA in Graphic Design from the Royal Academy of Arts in the Netherlands and an MA Graphic Moving Image from University of Arts, London, UK. After graduating from UAL she moved to France to work as a designer. She worked on developing accessibility solutions trough broadcasting messages in French Sign Language by virtual characters. After returning to the Netherlands, Marie started working at Eend.nl where she designed and developed websites for various companies, mostly for government agencies. Her focus is to design proper, meaningful and inclusive solutions. Being Deaf, Marie brings a unique perspective to digital work and inclusive design.
Marie has been a speaker at various occasions on UX and accessibility topics at a number of Meetups and Interaction ’18.

Designing for Belonging

What if you could bring yourself out of hiding and into the organization, even the parts of yourself that don’t seem to belong on surface level? Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard. Organizational and design consultant Liz Fosslien shares the small actions you can take to create a culture of belonging.

John Anderson, Technology Director, Smart Design
John takes a lead role in shaping the technology discipline at Smart through innovative processes, pilots and experiments. With a background in agile start-up techniques and a design-minded approach to engineering, he has more than a decade of experience in consulting, product design, software engineering and entrepreneurship. A frequent speaker on technology at General Assembly panels and in classrooms, John also received an Emmy in the “best kids digital” category for his work with PBS’s The Electric Company. Liz Fosslien is an organizational and design consultant whose clients include Salesforce, Ernst & Young, and the Stanford d.School. She previously worked as Executive Editor at Genius and as an economist consultant at Analysis Group. Liz's work has been featured by the Economist, The Financial Times, the Freakonomics blog, and NPR.

So, How Do You Design for Diversity and Inclusion?Alphonso Jordan, Founder and CEO of YellowbirdYellowbird, an Atlanta-based startup helps millennials understand personal finance on mobile devices in fun and engaging ways. Alphonso is a co-founder of a design collective that empowers creatives of color through an un-conference called the Hue Design Summit. Outside of his design endeavors, Alphonso is a member of the USA Track & Field Team, competing in the horizontal jumps.
