4th Citi-SMU Financial Literacy Symposium & Workshops

The 21st century is characterized by numerous technology-enabled financial solutions such as mobile payments, internet banking services, online lending and robo advisors. FinTech appeals to the tech-savvy youths for a reason, many of the services offered are easy to understand and convenient.

Cashless ecosystem minimizes the barriers and thus enables financial inclusion. Lowering the barrier translates into ease of spending by individuals. As the avenues for spending become more easily accessible, it becomes imperative for youths to be financially literate so as to manage their spending wisely. In some sense, FinTech will change the way money is perceived, financial education is no longer a luxury but a necessity. We need to educate individuals so that they can be empowered to make sensible financial decisions in the new technology-enabled world.

This year, Citi-SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults presents to you our annual symposium entitled "Financial Education to Financial Empowerment". The symposium aims to explore the diverse avenues to empower Singaporean youths in discovering and bolstering their existing base of financial literacy knowledge. We welcome you to be part of the discussion with our speakers and panellists in address the following questions:

  • Why is Financial Literacy an essential 21st Century Skill?
  • Who is responsible for educating the youths about Financial Literacy? Should Financial Education be part of the school curriculum? How can youths pick up Financial Literacy knowledge on their own?
  • How is FinTech the key driver of Financial Inclusion?
  • When FinTech is not the answer?
  • How FinTech, Financial Education and Financial Inclusion create a synergy?
  • How this understanding can help the youths, be it aspiring or existing professionals or entrepreneurs, in progressing to the next level?

In the lead-up to our Symposium, Citi-SMU Financial Literacy will be organising a series of workshops for you to sign up for.

About Citi-SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults

  • Launched in April 2012 by Citi Singapore and Singapore Management University with the support of the Citi Foundation, the Citi-SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults is Singapore's first structured financial literacy programme for young adults.
  • Through lectures, workshops and course curriculum, the programme seeks to equip young adults between the ages of 17 and 30 with essential personal finance knowledge and skills applicable to their life stage to give them a firm foundation in managing their money and a financial head-start early in their lives. A train-the-trainer model is adopted in which selected students from SMU and partner institutions are trained to deliver the financial literacy outreach curriculum to the young adult community, with the focus on reaching the low to moderate income.
  • Since its launch, the programme has engaged over 13000 young adults on a wide range of topics including basic money and credit management, financial and retirement planning, home and car ownership as well as principles of investment.
