Workshop & Lecture: Reliving the ancient Silk Road through Chinese textiles

The Hanfugirls Collective seek to re-examine and re-present the authentic Chinese cultural experiences and educational programmes. Focusing on female empowerment, the group's content will focus on female experiences, identity and representation in history, including concepts of Chinese femininity, role and rights of women in ancient China, courtesan narratives and of course, what fashion, make-up and accessories meant for an ancient Chinese woman.

While most associate silk with the Chinese, the average Han Chinese in China didn’t used to wear silk and the habit of donning silk was very much an aristocratic privilege. Many of the imperial crafts are still being continued in Japan and China today, including the famous carved silk tapestry kesi weave. This lecture will take you on a 2,000 year journey through the use of Silk in China and the evolving Chinese aesthetics. You will get to see first hand some of the rare silk crafts mentioned in ancient texts and used only by the imperial family, and see some of the replica dresses from those periods.
