English Language Newspapers in Multi-Ethnic Colonial Singapore

While long-running newspapers such as The Straits Times and Singapore Free Press are popular sources for historical research on Singapore, publications by English-literate Asians in colonial Singapore have received considerably less attention.

Join Senior Librarian Gracie Lee as she introduces some of these lesser known titles from the National Library’s collection. Newspapers such as Malaya Tribune, The Straits Eurasian Advocate, The Straits Chinese Herald and the Japanese-owned Singapore Herald were established to give voice to the worldviews, concerns and interests of the communities they represent.

About the Speaker

Gracie Lee is a Senior Librarian with the National Library, Singapore. She works with the rare materials collections, and her research areas are in Singapore’s publishing history and the Japanese Occupation.

About A Librarian's World

Ever wondered what librarians do? In this series of monthly talks, find out what makes our librarians tick as they share highlights of their work from the collections of the National Library.
