RARE GEMS & ITS PHENOMENON - Understanding other varieties of gems

Some gemstones possess rare and unusual features, such as "star", "cat's-eye" and "colour-change". One example is the star sapphire and star ruby. Contrary to the usual "high lustre", "high clarity" qualities of rubies and sapphires that one might see in the market, the star varieties are cut en cabochon (i.e. domed shape) and show beautiful bands of light reflection. Other examples of phenomenal gems are alexandrites and cat's-eye. Alexandrites are a variety of the gem Chrysoberyl. It changes colour under different lighting sources.

In this module, we explore the varieties of gemstones and the phenomenal features of unusual gems. We will also learn how to identify different types of gems by using the refractometer, a gemological instrument crucial to the identification process of a gemstone.

  • What is variety?

  • Types of phenomenal gemstones

  • How to use naked eye to observe lustre of gems

  • Using the refractometer to identify gemstones

* Price stated includes a phenomenal gem sample to add into your collection!

NOTE: Each intake is 12, if less than 5 paid registrants, the institute reserves the right to postpone to a later date.
