Event description
What’s cooking so late at night in Balestier? Join us on a supper feast around Balestier and hear the stories of the many stall owners opera

About this event

Take your tastebuds on a gastronomic journey in the historic Balestier! Fill your stomach with well-loved treats and your hearts with the stories of these stall owners operating in this district. From freshly baked bread and mouth-watering bak kut teh to savoury dumplings and herbal jelly, join us on this walk to witness the dedication of those working through the night to deliver these comfort foods to Singaporeans!

Meet your guide, Cynthia!

Hello everyone, I am Cynthia and I have been guiding since 2016! Like many other Singaporeans, I live to eat, not eat to live. The love for food has always been in my blood but if I had to trace it, I would say it started with me following my grandmother around as she sold hawker food out of a push cart along Banda Street in Chinatown. Being surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds of our hawkers, it is not just about the food but also how the food brings people together. Today, I always find it quite touching that I specialize in food tours that bring different people to savour our local delights around Chinatown.

From the numerous bak kut teh and chicken rice stalls to the famous tau sar piah at the end of the street, Balestier is a haven for our foodies throughout the day. I look forward to bringing everyone around Balestier to not just share our island home’s after hour offerings but also learn more about the faces and the work that go behind these beloved flavours!

Organiser My Community Festival

Organiser of After Hours @ My Balestier with Cynthia Wan

My Community Festival is a ground-up initiative showcasing Singapore’s best kept secrets and community stories through immersive tours, tastings and other cultural and heritage experiences.

4 Things To Know About The Festival

  • It is curated in collaboration with heritage practitioners, business owners, legacy brands as well as a number of religious and cultural institutions.
  • It builds upon the demand for culinary travel, cultural exploration and activity-based travel experiences - evident from the consumption habits of locals and tourists alike.
  • It aims to connect people from all walks of life through the festival platform in the hopes that they may go on to expand their social networks.
  • The festival has taken on an added dimension as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It serves as a means in which to re-introduce locals back to the island’s ethnic enclaves and to support local, legacy establishments in a triumphant display of resilience as a community. Let’s come together to celebrate the Singaporean spirit after a challenging 2020.
