After conducting many Arabic language courses over the years, we've realized that THIS course would be extremely useful to all students or fans of the Arabic language.

 

Culture or history affects a language and you *cannot* truly understand or appreciate a language if you don't also understand it's culture and history.

This course is for all those who have some interest in Arabic Language, History and Culture. It will expand students' knowledge of specific literary Eras of Arabic from pre-Islamic times to the present. The focus will be on areas of Arabic language, literature and culture.

Learning Outcome

On completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. Have a broad, general grasp of the history and civilization of the Arab world from the Pre-Islamic period (jahiliya) to the rise of Islam until the present
  2. Gain a good knowledge of the key developments in Arabic literature from pre-Islamic period till modern times.
  3. Gain a taste of the works of major classical poets and prose writers through intensive reading of select examples
  1. Locate classical authors and texts within their historical and cultural context.
  2. Apply analytical research of Arabic literature in writing.
  3. Demonstrate control of morphology of language and of the most frequently used patterns.
  4. Analyse, extract and use information from texts in relation to specific eras.
  5. Present an argument in English about aspects of Arabic literature in different eras.

 

Who should attend?

Anyone who has an interest in Arabic Language and History. The course does not require any familiarity with or ability to speak Arabic, as it will be conducted in English.

Frequency:

The course will be conducted once a week, on Tuesday from 8 to 10 pm, for 10 weeks.

Fees:

$ 210 including notes.
