Event description
The Bobbed-Hair Assassin in Kuala Lumpur (1925) and the Singapore Connection

About this event

On 23 Jan 1925, Wong So Ying, a young Chinese woman with anarchist leanings, exploded a bomb at the office of the Protector of Chinese in Kuala Lumpur, injuring the Protector, another European officer and herself.

In this talk, film researcher Toh Hun Ping will trace the eventful history of the case known as the “Kuala Lumpur Bomb Outrage”, using declassified colonial-era documents held at the National Archives of Singapore. He will highlight the role of a Singapore-based film company in the bomb outrage and its relationship to a short-lived anarchist movement across Singapore and Malaya during the early 20th century.

About the Speaker

Toh Hun Ping is a video artist and film researcher. He started the Singapore Film Locations Archive and has been investigating the history of film production in Singapore. He recently began researching anarchistic pursuits in early 20th century Singapore and Malaya and has presented his findings through writing, filmmaking and art installations. In Jan 2020, he exhibited Harbinger, an art installation based on his research at the National Archives of Singapore, as part of the Asian Film Archive’s annual film and art event, State of Motion.
