About the Programme/Event

Think Lit is a signature literary arts series that addresses contemporary topics in reading and literature for adults.

This talk by Dr Carissa Foo will examine the phenomenon of friendship in the novels of contemporary women writers. From conversations with friends to hesitation, budding relations to memories of lost friendships, the works of Sally Rooney, Ali Smith, Lorrie Moore, and Emma Donoghue help to draw out the inarticulable affections between women and the universal sense of loss that remains after the end of a friendship. Friendship will be discussed as a site of history, a foundation on which women’s lives are built; it is also a seismic force by which women’s lives are relationally changed.

 About the Speaker

Carissa Foo teaches literature and writing at Yale-NUS College. Her field of research is 20C women’s writing and its dialogues with perception theory and queer studies. She has published on spatial perception in the writings of Mansfield, Bowen, Woolf, and more recently on friendship narratives; she is also the author of the novel If it Were Up to Mrs Dada. She is currently working on a book project that surveys the portrayals of queer women in Singapore literature.
