Immerse yourself in the art of Batik Painting with Merit Award Artist Lau Sheow Tong

About this Event

Batik is an ancient painting style where designs on fabric are created using wax.

An introduction to batik painting and some local artists specializing in batik painting. (i.e. Sarkasi said) allows us to better appreciate this traditional art.

Participants will be introduced to Batik as a fine art painting in this course. They will learn Batik techniques of using dyes and resist in forming works of art with application of colour schemes and composition techniques.

They will complete 2 final works during this course.

No Class on 14 November (Public Holiday)

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Course fee:

$280 | $56 for seniors eligible for National Silver Academy (NSA) subsidy*

#Early bird price $54 for seniors.

*NSA subsidy is for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents aged 50 and above.

**Minimum 10 students to start class

Course fee may be offset by ^SkillsFuture Credit (SFC). First, course participants are to make payment for the course through Brahm Centre Eventbrite page, followed by claim with SFC. Brahm Centre will reimburse the amount that is successfully claim upon receipt of the funds from SFC. More details on SFC will be provided upon registration.

Course Outline:

Session 1:

Introduction to batik painting

Practice of batik basic techniques like painting in graduation and use of fabric resist to form lines

Session 2:

Recap the basic techniques and practising of Batik techniques learnt

Introduction to colour theories/schemes

Sketching of theme subjects with reference to slideshow

Introduction to composition techniques in forming designs/patterns for works

Session 3:

Transfer simple pattern design formed to trial canvas

Lining of work and follow up with dye painting

Session 4:

Transfer figurative design formed to trial canvas

Lining of work and follow up with dye painting

Sessions 5/6:

Sketching and forming design composition for actual work A4

Lining of work and follow up with dye painting

Sessions 7/8:

Introduction to diptych presentation of work (2 pieces of works related to form final work as a set)

Materials provided: 

- 3 brushes (round) of different sizes

- Sketching paper 5 pieces

- 1 pencil/1 eraser

- 3 pieces of 100% cotton cloth for trial (A5)

- 3 pieces of 100% cotton cloth for actual work (A4)

- Correction fluid 1 tube

Other art materials will be provided during the class

Batik dyes , Wooden frames or blocks for painting process (buffering canvas against table surface), Palettes, Water containers, Masking tapes, Sharpeners, Chicken rice paper for table protection

* Participants are encouraged to bring their own newspaper and cloth for their own usage.

  • Do ensure that you are able to attend the first session of the course before registering for the course as you will not be allowed to continue with the course should you miss the first session.
  • Request for transfers or make up-classes for selected mindfulness courses are subjected to availability and fees of $30 for transfers and $10 for make-up are applicable.

Trainer Profile:

Lau Sheow Tong is the founder of Composite Art & Design, a company that runs art education programmes for children, adults and seniors. He has an extensive track record in Art education spanning from primary to tertiary levels. As an Art teacher with Ministry of Education from 2000 to 2006 (April), he was teaching at both primary and secondary levels. While managing his company from 2006 (May) to 2015, he was also lecturing at Temasek Polytechnic (Design Integrated Studies), LaSalle College of the Arts (Fine Arts/Arts Management) and First Media Design School on part-time and consultation bases. As a teachers’ trainer with World Prime Arts Education (2007), he has conducted various Art workshops specially tailored for teachers from MOE such as Art Interpretation for Study of Visual Arts, Fashion Illustration, Mixed Media Painting etc.

As a practicing Artist, he has exhibited his works at local galleries such as Utterly Art (Solos: ‘Lucky Cat’, ‘Fantasy of Luck’) and Sunjin Gallery (Group Exhibitions: ‘Emerging Talents: 5 Artists for the Future’, ‘Sweetalicious’). He has also realized a community Art project The Garden under Composite Art & Design with paper sculpture works installed at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for Jurong Health Service.

His painting Circus of Plants was awarded Merit Award for International Botanicals Art Competition 2020 organised by Art Room Gallery UK.

He holds a Master in Fine Arts (2007) from LaSalle College of the Arts (validated by Open University, UK), a Post-graduate Diploma in Education (2000) from National Institute of Education and a Bachelor in Arts from National University of Singapore (1996). He has also acquired certifications in Nature Matters in Conversation; Neighbourhood Nature; Introducing the Environment: Ecology and Ecosystems from Open University (OU) due to his interest in Nature, Horticulture and Landscape Design.
