About the Programme
More than just simple piece of fabric, batik is also a written narrative that paints the history of its wearers and producers. Come dressed in your favourite Batik attire and learn more about the history and techniques of batik, uncover the stories behind its motifs and even pick up some tips on how to rock a batik sarong in this interactive and light-hearted talk.
About the speaker
Hafiz is an experienced museum docent who has been volunteering with NHB since 2013. As a trained docent, he has conducted tours at the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC), the National Library (NL) and the Eurasian Heritage Gallery (EHG). He is interested in learning about the history, culture, folklore and languages of the Malay Archipelago (Nusantara) with a special focus on the textile traditions of this region. He is also an avid textile collector; his batik collection includes pieces from all over Java as well as neighbouring Madura and even Terengganu in Malaysia. He is often seen wearing these textiles in his tours and incorporates them in his storytelling, sharing the stories behind their motifs and designs - stories with deep links to the past.
