About the Programme

Ever wondered what is the greatest gift you can pass on to future generations? Besides a cleaner environment, it is the selfless and priceless gift of donated brain tissue. Such tissue donations are essential for scientific research to better diagnose, prevent, treat, and cure conditions that affect the brain such as Dementia, Parkinson’s, and Stroke. Find out more about Brain Bank Singapore, Southeast Asia’s first Tissue Bank, and what it does. Learn some fun facts about the brain and have fun with brain-stimulating activities like Spot the Difference and Word Scramble.

About the Speakers:

Dr Joan Sim – Manager, Brain Bank Singapore

Dr Joan Sim holds a PhD in Biological Sciences, with specialisation in the topic of Neuroscience. She has about 9 years of research experience into the molecular and cellular study of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Ms Jillian Terese Teo – Donor Coordinator, Brain Bank Singapore

Ms Jillian Terese holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science. She is experienced in coordinating care, facilitating activities, and providing support for individuals with mental illness, families, and the elderly.As a team, Dr Joan and Ms Jillian provide community health education on neurological and psychiatric conditions affecting the brain and share about the importance of scientific studies using human brain tissue. They also facilitate the consent process involved in the registration for this prospective donor scheme and the coordination of organ tissue donation procedure.

About the Series

Thinking and planning for end-of-life decisions can be difficult and uncomfortable. These hypothetical questions often remain unanswered until it’s too late. Bringing together experts from various fields, this series serves as an introduction to the various facets of end-of-life matters, and aims to get you started in thinking and talking about such matters Ahead of Your Time.

    • All participants are required to register for a ticket. Each ticket admits 1 person only. Please present your ticket when you enter the library and the event venue. 
    • Arrive 10 mins before the session commences. Seats of late attendees may be given to those in the waitlist.
