Leave it to the French to take a simple butter cake and turn it into something spectacular. That is what they have done in the coast of Brittany with Brittany Cake or called Gateau Breton.

It is unlike any butter cake you have seen, this is a cross between shortbread and cake. Gateau Breton has soft buttery crumb and this classic French cake is similar to a giant shortbread, though more moist and tender.

Hidden prune filling is used traditionally, but you can substitute with other dried fruits, such as apricot or fig.
