Event description

Description

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands invites you to a free screening of the human rights documentary Sonita on 9 December in collaboration with Movies that Matter, an organisation that believes the film camera is a powerful weapon against social indifference. We appreciate the assistance of the ANU Film Group in facilitating the screening of this documentary.

Main character Sonita is an 18-year old Afghani refugee who is illegally living in Tehran and dreams of being a rapper. But women aren’t allowed to sing in public in Iran and as a bride she’s worth $9,000. It is a thrilling account of a journey full of successes and failures – a journey on which Sonita is fighting for her artistic rights. Due to the theme of the documentary, we would recommend our audience to be 12 years or older.

The documentary explores human rights on a personal level and hopes to spark a conversation; one of the many conversations that will be taking place on the commemoration of International Human Rights Day on 10 December. This day gives us the chance to reflect on current human rights practices and discuss future goals.

Promoting and protecting human rights worldwide is a foreign policy priority of the Netherlands. The Dutch government employs a wide array of actions and initiatives geared towards the strengthening of human rights. By showing the documentary Sonita, we hope to raise awareness, inspire and add to the global discussion.

The Netherlands Embassy Deputy Head of Mission to Australia Arthur den Hartog will open the evening with a short introduction. Join us after the screening for complimentary refreshments. Please arrive at 7pm for a 7.15 start.

Please RSVP by 5 December to avoid disappointment.
