About the Programme/Event

What messages are we teaching our students about the environment without even noticing? What narratives about the nonhuman world have we ourselves picked up through our education? The book club will look at a recent study from Yale-NUS College researchers Neo Xiaoyun and Prof Schneider-Mayerson. The systematic study found that Singapore's secondary history textbooks often focus on developmental and economic history with little mention of the environmental costs onto the natural environment. The article then discusses how these anti-environmental values taught could inhibit Singapore's ability to respond to climate change and other socio-ecological challenges. The discussion will center around the role of environmental history as well as values-based education for a socially & environmentally just future.  We can also think about the national and environmental narratives that we have been taught in our formative, impressionable years, and consider some actions-based steps forward to re-educate ourselves.

About the Club

The Nature Club aspires to be an intergenerational book club (for all ages), creating a space that centres the narratives and discourse that matter so dearly to us. Crises like the climate crisis - among others - often inject moments of ecological grief, hurt and isolation, and it is in such times, when we need to come together as a community and as people. We hope to find some of that in stories; Stories we read in our younger days, stories we may see in a movie or film, and the stories that speak closest to our hearts.
