Event description

Description

EUNIC Malaysia cordially invites you to a free screening of an Austrian movie based on the life of author Christine Noestlinger, that shows us the Vienna of 1945 at the end of the Second World War. It is the time of the Russian occupation, seen through the eyes of nine-year-old Christine. After the family’s house is hit and badly damaged during air raids, her mother accepts the offer of Mrs. von Braun to move with her two daughters to a villa in Neuwaldegg, while the grandparents stay in the bombed apartment. Christina's father (a soldier of the Wehrmacht) escapes from the hospital where he was taken after being heavily wounded, and returns to his family. As a deserter he has to hide from both German and Russian soldiers. After the capitulation of the Wehrmacht, Russian soldiers make the villa their quarters. While most are afraid of them because of their unpredictable nature and their constant drunkenness, Christine befriends the field cook Cohn. (Courtesy of the Austrian Embassy Kuala Lumpur)
