Event description

Description

In Daniel Kahneman’s book “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, he describes two modes of thought for decision-making - fast, intuitive, thinking guided by feelings and emotions; and slow, careful, analysis and deliberation. Both are rational but both sometimes lead to bad decisions. For example, fast-thinking often fails in scenarios where the consequences are large and catastrophic, and perceived as distant from decision-makers with relation to time and geography, as with climate change and genocide. Fast decisions also often simplify complex trade-offs by relying on compelling imperatives and “sound bites” that sound convincing but cut off more careful analysis. In this talk, Professor Paul Slovic will discuss his research and examine the intricacies of fast and slow decision-making.

Seats are limited. Admission will be by registration only.
