Event description

Description

Synopsis:
This 3-hour masterclass explores the fundamentals of creative non-fiction [CNF]. Creative non-fiction includes memoir, the personal essay (aka ‘the lyric essay’), travel writing, reportage, comic writing, narrative history, research narratives and other sub-genres. This course provides beginners an introduction to the fascinating possibilities (both artistic and commercial) of creative non-fiction. While poetry, fiction and stage theatre are admirably vibrant here in Singapore, CNF is currently not as popular here in Singapore as it is in other English-language literary markets and cultures.

Outline:
- Distinguish between narrative genres (e.g.screenplays) and contemplative/meditative genres (e.g poetry)
- Distinguish between narrative CNF and contemplative CNF
- Consider narrative fundamentals in CNF
- Encounter the power of reflection in CNF
- Meet the rich variety of sub-genres in CNF

Facilitator:
Dr. Darryl Whetter is the inaugural director of the first Creative Writing MA in Singapore and Southeast Asia (at LASALLE College of the Arts). He is the author of three books of fiction and two poetry collections. In his native Canada, his debut collection of stories was a Globe and Mail Top 100 Book of 2003 and, Origins, his first poetry collection, received a starred review in Quill & Quire. His scholarly articles on literature and Creative Writing pedagogy have been published by Routledge, the National Poetry Foundation (US), and Presses Sorbonne Nouvelle, etc.
