Harnessing Deep Tech for Eldercare

The Singapore Health Technologies consortium (HealthTEC.SG) is supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) to develop the health technology ecosystem. We focus on both software- and hardware-based health technologies that will transform health and wellness. Though facilitating partnerships across academia, industry and healthcare institutions, the Consortium accelerates the adoption and value capture of technologies developed in the Singapore public sector by the industry.To create opportunities for synergies between different stakeholders in the ecosystem, HealthTEC.SG organises health technology symposia, seminars and workshops for public attendance, as well as exclusive networking events for our members. HealthTEC.SG is a National Platform hosted in the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR). In addition, the Consortium is positioned as a platform to attract regional companies to innovate in Singapore.

In this session, the speakers will share on the innovation trends and technologies to address the increasing needs of the ageing population.

Interested to know about innovative trends and technologies for eldercare?By 2030, the Singapore’s ageing trend means one in five people is aged 65 or older, and the nation will be one of the “super-aged” countries. Technological innovations are therefore key to alleviate potential strain on the healthcare system and to provide quality care to the ageing population. New ways of delivering healthcare such as tele-rehabilitation and technologies that enable early detection of issues faced by the elderlies would help to increase the productivity, efficiency and quality of healthcare. About the Speakers:Janice Chia, Ageing Asia Alliance, SingaporeInfluenced by the changing needs of her elders, Janice was inspired to start Ageing Asia to drive and nurture opportunities and the development of innovation and solutions that address the evolving needs of the rising ageing population in the region. Having accumulated a vast experience from visiting over 400 residential and aged care homes from over 15 countries since starting her practice in 2009, Janice has been actively involved in consulting organisations seeking global best practices in housing, health and care models that can be translated for the Asian market. She has also been quoted regularly in the media, such as the BBC, on Asia Pacific business trends in ageing. Janice has also launched several industry initiatives, including, ASPIRE55 Singapore – Asia’s first virtual retirement village, a wellbeing community that offers a combination of social, health and care services, but enables members to continue living in their existing homes. Yen Shih-Cheng, NUSShih-Cheng received his B.S.E. and M.S.E. in 1993, and his Ph.D. in 1998, all from the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. For his PhD, he worked on neural network models of the primary visual cortex. He then spent several years performing single-neuron recordings in the primary visual cortex of both anesthetized cats and awake, behaving non-human primates, first as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Davis, and subsequently as a Research Assistant Professor at Montana State University. He was previously with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Deputy Director of the Singapore Institute for Neurotechnology (SINAPSE) at NUS. As a result of the work done with several years of students, Dr. Yen started a company (T-Rehab) with 2 other NUS colleagues in 2016 that licensed the tele-rehabilitation system developed in NUS. The company was subsequently engaged by the Ministry of Health in October 2016 to roll out the tele-rehabilitation system to multiple hospitals and rehabilitation centres in Singapore. Chiam Keng-Hwee, A*STARKeng-Hwee’s group uses a combination of biophysical and bioinformatics tools to study cell migration. Cell migration is a critical process in every living organism, central to, for example, the morphogenesis of embryos, formation of tissues and organs, wound repair, as well as in less welcoming scenarios such as cancer metastasis. Some of their current projects include the study of amoeboid modes of cancer cell invasion, collective modes of epithelial cell sheet migration, and swimming and swarming modes of bacterial cell motility. He hopes that their approach will enable them to identify potential targets to perturb cell migration, which can eventually be translated into drugs to stop cancer cell invasion, promote wound and skin healing, or stop the aggregation of bacterial cells into biofilms.
