ABOUT THE EVENT

This concert will explore the creative genius and diverse output of the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. Regularly known as the "Father of the String Quartet", Haydn's innovative and ambitious Op. 76 represents the culmination of an instrumentation that he helped popularise into its modern form. At the same time, no commemoration of Haydn can be complete without showcasing his piano music, which will be performed on a Fortepiano built by Paul McNulty based on instruments by the Viennese instrument maker Walter & Sohn from the late 18th century. The evening will then culminate in a performance of Haydn's "Mass in Time of War", which was written towards the end of the French Revolution, and is often cited as containing anti-war sentiments and messages of peace.
