Event Details

This course has been approved by the MOH appointed National Ethics Capability Committee (NECC) as a train-the-trainer programme. Healthcare professionals who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. They will have the knowledge and skills required for teaching their colleagues. You must attend all three parts of the course to qualify for the NECC subsidy to attend this course for free. You will also be expected to teach other healthcare professionals healthcare ethics in the future.

Note 1: All classes will be held at the NUS Yong Loo Lin Medical School. We will notify you by email of the exact venue after you have registered.
Note 2: We can only accommodate 60 learners in this course run. Class size capacity is 60 for Part 1. Class size capacity for Part 2 is 30, and to accommodate a total of 60 learners, we will be running 2 sessions.

Part 1: Core Concepts in Healthcare Ethics held on 5th August 2017 - full day held at MD11, Symposium Room, 01-03/04, 10 Medical Drive, NUS, S117597

This one-day workshop will provide you with a foundational understanding of healthcare ethics. The topics covered include professionalism, collegiality, professional accountability and governance, consent, conflict of interest, confidentiality and privacy, and professionalism. This interactive workshop will engage healthcare professionals through clicker question and answer sessions, and in-depth case discussions. 

The trainers for this workshop are seasoned professionals from the Singapore Medical Association Centre for Medical Ethics and Professionalism (SMA CMEP).

Part 2: Developing, Analysing & Using Case Narratives in Healthcare Ethics Education - 2 full days held at NUS (exact venues to be confirmed and informed closer to date)

This two-day programme will draw on both volumes of the Singapore online bioethics casebook Making Difficult Decisions with Patients and Families, and Caring for Older People in an Ageing Society to explore the development, analysis and use of cases in teaching and learning about healthcare ethics. You will be assigned pre-readings and assignments that require preparation outside of class time.

The trainers for this programme are A/P Jacqueline Chin of the NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Dr. Nancy Berlinger of the Hastings Center (New York). 

Part 3: Teaching Practicum

In this final stage, the you will be mentored by an experienced healthcare ethics educator, who will provide support and guidance for your first session teaching other healthcare professionals in the Core Module in Healthcare Ethics, Law & Professionalism. The schedule for this Core Module has not yet been finalised, but is likely to be scheduled sometime between January 2018 to March 2019. You will be expected to co-teach in a small group with other healthcare professionals.
