How to think like a programmer - lessons in problem-solving + attitude

If you’re interested in learning how to code, you may have read this quote before:

“Everyone in this country should learn to program a computer because it teaches you to think.” — Steve Jobs

You probably also wondered what does it mean, exactly, to think like a programmer? And how do you do it??

Essentially, it’s all about a more effective way for problem-solving.

*️⃣The misconception:

Doing Le Wagon is intense. The learning curve is steep. And frequently, our students misunderstand where the struggle lies. They think the hairy bit is actually writing code - learning the syntax - but the real battle lies in the mindset of the student, their problem-solving abilities, and the attitude they have around learning.

*️⃣Why the leap into tech is scary:

Learning how to code is a big commitment. And oftentimes, the day to day work of a programmer is somewhat hazy for us outsiders, which makes the world of development that much more of a leap of faith for those of us who are considering entering.

*️⃣It's all about practice:

And many of us that don’t have a mathematical or engineering background, see analytical thinking and problem solving as a God-Given-Talent. A skill you’re either born with or not. But here’s the thing, like almost everything in life, it’s all about practice.

⭐️The plan for the evening:

We will start the evening with an introduction to problem-solving techniques. Once we’ve given you a taste of what it means to think like a developer (skipping the code part), we will invite a panel of developers to discuss the attitude one needs to thrive in a programming career.
