Description

A Connect on Exploring Effective/ Ineffective Group Interventions

What if you just stand there while…

  • a group falls into chaos and blames it on you;

  • somebody says something divisive and everybody looks to you to fix it;

  • people split over goals, and question your authority

  • stereotype each other to the point where work halts…”

(extracted from “Don’t just do something, stand there” by Marvin Weisbord and Sandra Janoff)

As we facilitate meetings, workshops, and/or seminars, we are constantly making choices of intervention. What had been your tendency in those moments? Do you sometimes query if you are... trying too hard? Letting go too soon? Moving on too quickly? Taking on too much that you may somehow steal the thunder of an individual or a group...?

In this upcoming Connect, we will be sharing some principles and techniques suggested by Marvin Weisbord & Sandra Janoff to build our muscles for “doing less”, so as to help others do more. More importantly, we will be diving into our own internal dialogues in those moments of choices to better understand our own tendency of intervention.

Here is a short outline of the connect (subject to changes per the group’s needs ;-))

  • Explore the whats and hows of effective/ ineffective intervention

  • Share practices and techniques from the book

  • Reflect on facilitators’ competing commitments

  • Embrace our strengths and shadow
