Exhibition 11-28 NOV 2017 12:00-00:00

INKPULSE墨契charts the course of Yeo Shih Yun’s art journey from 2000 until 2017—from the budding years falling in love with Chinese ink, diving headfirst into Abstract Expressionism and Rothko and the other “gods” that would serve to underpin Yeo Shih Yun’s artistic journey. With an ink-based, East-meets-West aesthetic—influenced by the tutelage of eminent painter Chua Ek Kay—Yeo Shih Yun pursues new depths within the realm of Abstract Expressionism, mixing means, mediums and collaborators.

This exhibition showcases works from different periods of Shih Yun’s career, from her signature series that won her a commission from Singapore Art Museum, to her series with toy robots as her collaborators to her early ink paintings.

About Yeo Shih Yun
Born in Singapore 1976, Shih Yun is a full-time artist and Founding Director of INSTINC, an independent artist-run space. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration(Marketing) from National University of Singapore (NUS), Diploma in Communications Design from Lasalle College of the Arts and Post-Baccalaureate(Painting) from San Francisco Art Institute in 2002. Shih Yun is known to reinterpret the very act of ink painting with striking results. Her experimentations of fusing the traditional form with contemporary mediums like new media or performance art has garnered much acclaim, including a commission by the Singapore Art Museum, winning the Sovereign Asian Art Prize People's Choice Award in 2012 and being awarded a Certificate of Distinction and Highly Commended Entry at the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2007. Her painting at the Sovereign Asian Art Prize was auctioned by Christie’s Asia in 2012. She has exhibited both locally and internationally and her works have also been collected by The Four Seasons Hotel, Hangzhou at Westlake, China, Marina@Keppel Bay and arts patron, Mr Koh Seow Chuan.

About 姚詩韻

About INKPULSE Book:

INKPULSE: The Art of Yeo Shih Yun chronicles the course of Yeo Shih Yun's 18 years long artistic journey, from the early 2000s when she first fell in love with ink and decided to pursue her dream to today having founded an independent art space that speaks volumes of the exceptional creative collaborations she has been a part of over the years and established an impressive oeuvre of works that ranges from pure abstraction to unconventional experimentation. With an ink-based, East-meets-West aesthetic - influenced by the tutelage of the eminent painter Chua Ek Kay - this monograph conceptualises the artist's pulsating pursuit for new depths and new perspectives within and beyond the realm of Abstract Expressionism.

Conversations with chance and a spontaneous search for poetic sentiments and dramatic unknowns are important features of Yeo Shih Yun's art-making process. "It is all about the marks," she says, "What I ultimately seek is the imperfection that comes with an unconstrained and intuitive technique".

This publication is a progressive catalogue of art she has done over the years, interspersed with accounts by the people she has met along the way - inspiring industry professionals like Marjorie Chu and Kay Liu, visionary collectors like Koh Seow Chuan, established curators like Iola Lenzi and Louis Ho as well as friends and fellow artists. It is only through reading their essays does the chaos fall into order, with the randomness of collective memories offering new, multi-layered dimensions to Yeo Shih Yun’s art—the closing of one chapter and delving into the next.
