Description

KWOK KIAN-WOON - Public Conversations:
“Garden, Ocean, Archipelago: Re-imagining Space, Social Life, Singapore”

Jointly organised by Singapore Heritage Society, School of Social Sciences of Singapore Management University (SMU) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)

Professor Kwok Kian-Woon
is a sociologist at the Nanyang Technological University; as a citizen, he is an active participant in civil society. His teaching, research, and areas of concem include social memory, mental health, the arts and heritage, and Asian modemity. He served as president of the Singapore Heritage Society from 1998-2001.

In this public conversation with SHS President, Dr Chua Ai Lin, Prof Kwok Kian-Woon explores what lies beyond the metaphor of Singapore as a "garden". This dominant idea has shaped but also
limited our spatial, historical, and social imagination. He invites us to recover and rediscover our complex heritage as an island-city-nation-state in the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asian and in-between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. In re-imagining Singapore more broadly and deeply, Prof Kwok shows we can draw from diverse sources: environmental science, geography, archaeology, history, sociology, and the arts. We witness this new imagination in Zai Kuning's contribution to the 2017 Venice BiennaleDapunta Hyang: Transmission of Knowledge”, which is based on his lifelong research on the Orang Laut of the Riau Archipelago.

ABOUT THE PUBLIC CONVERSATIONS SERIES

The Public Conversations series comprises four public forums to be held in May, June, August and October, 2017. Each forum will feature as keynote speaker who is a former president of the Singapore Heritage Society, namely Dr William Lim (founding president), Dr Kevin Tan, Prof Kwok Kian Woon, and Ms Dahlia Shamsuddin. The series is organised in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Singapore Heritage Society, and the 10th anniversary of School of Social Sciences of Singapore Management University (SMU), with the support of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Singapore’s land use, planning and conservation agency.

The keynote speakers will present their own visions and thoughts on heritage, advocacy, NGO and policy engagements, and their experience during their tenure as SHS presidents. Dr. Chua Ai Lin, the current president of SHS, is the discussant and moderator for the series. The Public Conversations series is further facilitated by the SMU School of Social Sciences taking on the role of introducer and respondent to the forums, with URA as a facilitator for the discussions. This will be followed by Q & A and discussion with the audience, in the spirit of the series title, Public Conversations.

Jointly organised by Singapore Heritage Society, School of Social Sciences of Singapore Management University (SMU) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).
