Description

Join us to help preserve LPB’s broadcasting history!

Louisiana Public Broadcasting is joining forces with the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) to fix selected transcripts from LPB’s longest running series, Louisiana: The State We’re In. On Tuesday, July 10th from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, LPB will be hosting a FIX IT+ Transcript-a-Thon at our headquarters in Baton Rouge. You can help us fix transcripts from Louisiana: The State We’re In episodes from the late 1970s and early 1980s. These shows will include a variety of segments on: Louisiana’s colorful political history, including former Governors Edwin Edwards and Dave Treen; interviews with former LSU band director Castro Carazo and former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown; coverage of news stories of the day, including the Livingston Train Derailment and the 1983 Special Olympics in Baton Rouge; and even a fun alligator hunt.

LPB will provide lunch. We’ll also take you on a tour of the station! You will also learn more about LPB’s Louisiana Digital Media Archive (ladigitalmedia.org) and the AAPB (americanarchive.org). And you’ll get to take home some fun LPB and AAPB prizes!

LPB has a very limited number of laptops available. Please bring your own headphones and laptop if you have one.

The AAPB is a collaboration between Boston public broadcaster WGBH and the Library of Congress with a mission of preserving public media’s 70+ year legacy from around the United States and providing free, public access to these historic programs. LPB has been a leading participating station in the AAPB since 2009.

In order to make these programs easier to find and more accessible, the AAPB has created transcripts that can be indexed by websites and search engines. With funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the AAPB has launched a web-based app called FIX IT+. Using machine generated transcripts, FIX IT+ audiences engage in a community effort to identify and correct errors in these transcripts. You can check it out now at fixitplus.americanarchive.org. These transcripts will then live on in the AAPB and the Louisiana Digital Media Archive, providing value for scholars, researchers, students, teachers, and lifelong learners now and in future generations.
