Event description
Step into the kitchens of 11 home cooks and be prepared to be blown away by the mouth-watering flavours of their traditional curries!

About this Event

We Singaporeans love eating curry. Assam Fish Head, Eurasian’s Devil’s Curry, Aloo Gobi and Tikka Masala – the possibilities are endless. How many of these curries have you tried?

Makan My Curry brings Singaporeans into the homes of 11 different home cooks to hear more about the processes and stories behind their curries and culture.

What is Eurasian Kari Debal?

The Eurasian Devil’s Curry, or kari debal, is usually prepared during Christmas or Boxing Day. It is layered with flavours of soy sauce and vinegar and utilises leftovers from big parties held on the eve of Christmas or on Christmas Day itself. Debal means leftover in Kristang. The dish is said to have originated in Malacca.

About the cook

Kurt Nicholas runs Casa Kumi or House of Food, a Eurasian home dining experience.

He picked up the cuisine from his mother and grandmother. He shared: “I grew up in a family of cooks starting with my great-grandmother who used to live in this very big house in Bukit Timah. Its kitchen was where three generations of the family used to gather. I took bits and pieces from these gatherings and picked up skills of my own along the way.”

Mr Nicholas will be sharing his kari debal recipe at MCF2020. The dish has a special place in his heart. Christmas of yesteryears would always start with the enticing scent of the dish rousing him from his sleep. His grandmother would have started work on the dish from as early as 7am, he explained.
