Event description
Step into the kitchens of 11 home cooks and be prepared to be blown away by the mouth-watering flavours of their traditional curries!

About this Event

We Singaporeans love eating curry. Assam Fish Head, Eurasian’s Devil’s Curry, Aloo Gobi and Tikka Masala – the possibilities are endless. How many of these curries have you tried?Makan My Curry brings Singaporeans into the homes of 11 different home cooks to hear more about the processes and stories behind their curries and culture.

What is Jaffna Curry?

Sri Lanka, formally known as Ceylon, is known for its spicy yet citrusy curries infused with Ceylonese cinnamon and coconut milk. Unlike Cassia cinnamon, the Ceylon cinnamon used in Ceylonese curries is a rarer breed of spice from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree native to Sri Lanka. Join us for a taste of Indra Iswaran’s take on the curry.

About the cook

Mrs Iswaran, a Singaporean with Tamil roots in Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), has since come a long way. She now runs an immersive dining experience called Plantation Table at her home in Binjai Park. Her speciality - Ceylonese food.

She credits her mother for her love of food. Her mother, she said, was adept at cooking all kinds of cuisines. The intersection of culinary cultures in Ipoh, Malaysia, where Mrs Iswaran was born and raised, also helped her appreciate the diversity of Asian flavours.

While doing her postgraduate studies in England, she missed these flavours dearly which is why she picked up cooking and decided to refine her culinary chops. She said: “We were quite versatile at home in Ipoh. My mum cooked Chinese, Malay, Indian and British food so I developed the taste buds for it. I love a good char kway teow and ayam lemak, and gosh because I missed these dishes so much in England, I learnt how to make them for myself. My mother never gave me any recipes. She sent me off, saying get married, and that’s it! The rest I sorted out on my own.”
