Description

This is a skills development workshop that is very practical. It is designed to give healthcare professionals competence in handling difficult patient interactions. It explores

  • the causes of difficult interactions
  • clinicians’ automatic reactions to “difficult” patients
  • the specific choices faced by clinicians in difficult interactions
  • skills for effectively handling difficult interactions.

The workshop presents the MPS S.O.L.V.E.© model – a proven step-by-step approach for handling difficult interactions that assists to keep both doctors and patients focused on reaching an agreed solution.

Learning Objectives

  • To assist doctors to be able to “diagnose” the problem in a difficult interaction
  • To explore useful concepts and effective models for dealing with interactional difficulties
  • To learn and rehearse communication and negotiation skills for difficult situations
  • To learn techniques for minimizing conflict
  • To learn personal “survival” techniques to minimize stress
