Event description
Fancy painting a lantern or being part of a lion dance ensemble? Pick up some nifty skills from our country’s beloved practitioners.

About this Event

Remember those traditional joss sticks makers, rangoli artists and lion dance troupe members? Despite rising competition, many intangible cultural heritage practitioners remain passionate about their craft. Meet My Craftsman brings Singaporeans to visit nine of these craftsmen, and at the same time, have their hands at practicing them!

About Say Tian Hng

Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop was founded in 1896 by two migrant brothers from Jinmen, China at 6 Gemmill Lane. The shop later moved to its current location at 35 Neil Road. Ng Tze Yong, the oldest son of owner Ng Yeow Hua, has been working alongside his father and grandmother to promote their craft and family enterprise to the wider Singaporean public.

About the Craftsman

Mr Ng said he has been troubled by how the shop and its products seem to intimidate visitors. In an effort to make these statues more relatable to a non-Taoist audience, Mr Ng takes the time to share the backstories of figures like Nezha, Xuan Wu and Monkey God - all of whom are recognised for their display of universally relatable qualities of courage and bravery - with members of the public and walk-in visitors.

“At face value, we seem to be selling statues, but I think we’re actually selling stories. It is the power of these stories which make these statues so important to the lives of devotees. They represent important values such as courage, loyalty and devotion. These values have become increasingly important for the world we are living in today.”

To sustain the business, Mr Ng works 12 hours a day, seven days a week with occasional breaks on Sunday afternoons. Apart from commissioned works, Mr Ng also does repair and refurbishment works for local temples.

Moving forward, Mr Ng said he feels a need to attract skilled modern craftsmen to join the business. He shared that he hopes that the shop can last for many more generations to come. He added: “The shop is about the migrant experience, it is about the values the deities embody, and it is about the importance of artisanal work in a world of technology. I hope for the shop to become a space for community discourse, where it’s not just about selling a product, but a place where people come to discuss culture and share stories.”
