Event description
Fancy painting a lantern or being part of a lion dance ensemble? Pick up some nifty skills from our country’s beloved practitioners.

About this Event

Remember those traditional joss sticks makers, rangoli artists and lion dance troupe members? Despite rising competition, many intangible cultural heritage practitioners remain passionate about their craft. Meet My Craftsman brings Singaporeans to visit nine of these craftsmen, and at the same time, have their hands at practicing them!

What is ERA Dance Theatre?

Era Dance Theatre has been staging performances since 1992. The troupe is inspired by Singapore's melting pot of cultures and presents this diversity in a number of creative ways. The performing arts group will be giving an introduction to the art form, conducting a live demonstration and facilitating a brief dance tutorial for participants of MCF2020.

About the Craftsman

Osman Abdul Hamid is the founder and artistic director of Era Dance Theatre. He picked up dance in his teens. After finishing secondary school in 1978, Mr Osman joined the People’s Association and the Sriwana Malay Dance Group at the recommendation of his teacher, Mr Salleh Buang. These experiences proved to be eye-opening for Mr Osman as it exposed him to the diversity of Singapore’s multicultural dance scene.

Under the tutelage of Mr Nongchik Ghani, Mr Osman began choreographing and taking on a number of overseas production projects in the 1980s. After suffering from a bout of sickness, Mr Osman decided to pursue his dream of setting up his own dance company, Teater Tari Era, in 1996. Over the past two decades, Mr Osman has actively contributed to the local dance scene. Among other things, he choreographs dances for Chingay and the Esplanade.

Taking inspiration from history and heritage, Mr Osman enjoys telling stories from different colourful episodes in Singapore’s past. One production he put together, which he named Tumasik, illustrates Singapore’s role as a maritime port before the arrival of the British. It was based on an academic essay written by Sher Banu AL Khan.
