Event description
Create your intricate Peranakan beadwork in an intimate workshop with Baba Raymond Wong from Rumah Kim Choo!

About this event

Love and labour go into every bead of Raymond’s Peranakan beadwork. Try your hand at beadwork with Baba Raymond Wong and hear more about his journey in mastering this age-old craft. By the end of the session, participants will complete a small wearable piece of beadwork that they can call their own!

Meet Raymond Wong!

Hello, I am Baba Raymond Wong from Rumah Kim Choo! For me, good Peranakan beadwork is done with skill and an eye for design. As much as it is about neat stitching, it is also about choosing the right colours and bead materials to bring the designs to life.

I first picked up Peranakan beading from a church friend back in the early 2000s. While the basic stitches were graciously taught to me, I had to learn the more advanced techniques through trial and error. As someone who enjoys embroidery, I would collect antique beadwork from around the world and carefully deconstruct them to study their techniques and use them to further my own practice. At the end of the day, what I love most about Peranakan beadwork is how it embodies our shared heritage. From the colours and motifs to the history of the craft, it is testament to our unique Nanyang heritage and it is the preservation of this practice that keeps me going.

Organiser My Community Festival

Organiser of Meet My Craftsman: Peranakan Beadworks Maker Raymond Wong

My Community Festival is a ground-up initiative showcasing Singapore’s best kept secrets and community stories through immersive tours, tastings and other cultural and heritage experiences.

4 Things To Know About The Festival

  • It is curated in collaboration with heritage practitioners, business owners, legacy brands as well as a number of religious and cultural institutions.
  • It builds upon the demand for culinary travel, cultural exploration and activity-based travel experiences - evident from the consumption habits of locals and tourists alike.
  • It aims to connect people from all walks of life through the festival platform in the hopes that they may go on to expand their social networks.
  • The festival has taken on an added dimension as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It serves as a means in which to re-introduce locals back to the island’s ethnic enclaves and to support local, legacy establishments in a triumphant display of resilience as a community. Let’s come together to celebrate the Singaporean spirit after a challenging 2020.
