We are pleased to invite Assoc. Prof. Gordon Meadow from Southampton Solent University to give us a talk on the topic: Maritime Autonomous Systems – Workforce Succession Planning for the Future.

This will be followed by a networking dinner.

Abstract of talk

This presentation will look at the likely technological developments over the next couple of decades and the impact this will have on the focus of seafarers training, education and skills. Gordon will also introduce the audience to some of the research and Innovation projects that he’s currently working on, including the Southampton Solent University Rolls Royce virtual engine room collaboration, Project IMAGINE.


About the speaker:

Gordon Meadow is an Associate Professor at one of the United Kingdom's leading maritime training institutions, Warsash Maritime Academy, which is part of the Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering at Southampton Solent University.

Following a career at sea in the commercial yacht market, Gordon moved to academia, specialising in navigational technology. He has taught at all levels in the UK Merchant Navy from new entrant marine cadet to master mariner, as well as both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and is a visiting lecturer at MSTI in Hong Kong. He is an examiner for the InternationalAssociation of Maritime Institutions in Navigation and Electronic Navigation and Chair of the MASSIG, an IMarEST Special Interest Group considering skill sets and training needs for seafarers of the future in light of the growth of autonomy in shipping.

He has presented internationally on his research interests in maritime education ranging, autonomous shipping to technologically influenced pedagogy. Other interests are in experiential learning, immersive emulating simulation and virtual reality. He was active in the Rolls Royce lead innovate UK MAXCMAS autonomous ships project and is Principal Investigator for the Rolls Royce collaborative autonomous ship engineering project, IMAGINE. He is also principal Investigator on project WAVE, where he and his team, ranging four countries are developing a best practice toolkit and smart phone application for synthetic teaching and learning activities. Launching in later in the year, the LookSea VR App will provide ‘Oven Ready’ virtual lessons to be used in maritime pedagogy, free for use to all International Association of Maritime Institution (IAMU) training establishments across the globe. He is married with two children and lives in a pretty Hampshire village on the South Coast of England.
