Description

Dear members,

We are pleased to invite Assoc. Prof. Ivan CK Tam from Newcastle Unversity Singaproe Campus to give us a talk on the topic: The Demise of Diesel and His Engine.

This will be followed by a networking dinner.

6.30 pm Registration & Refreshment
7.00 pm Presentation and Q&A
8.00 pm Dinner

Abstract of talk

Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel, a German engineer, invented one of the greatest internal combustion engine based on compression ignition cycle in history. He was born in Paris, France in 1858 and he died in the English Channel with mysterious circumstances in 1913. While his legacy, the Diesel cycle engine, is much celebrated, his effort and determination leading to success of this great invention is less mentioned. This presentation will look at his life, his invention, the competitive advantage and shortcomings of the diesel cycle as well as the advancement of technology and regulation leading to the predicted decline of engines based on compression ignition cycle for transportation in the near future. A case study of exhaust emission generated from marine engine combustion will be shown.

About the speaker:

Ivan Tam is an Associate Professor at Newcastle University, Singapore campus since 2010. He possesses a wealth of experience in multi-disciplinary research and a strong track record of leading innovative teaching projects. Upon completing his engineering training in thermal power stations and shipyards, he established his research interest at the then Cranfield University as a Research Officer. He has strong interest in the combustion process, exhaust emission control, energy management and renewable energy technology. His recent research interest is the application of cryogenic technology of LNG in the reduction of ship hull resistance as well as ballast water and sewage water treatment technology. He is a Fellow member, Assessor of Registration, Honorary Advisor and Immediate Past Chairman of the Joint Branch (IMarEST & RINA). He received the President's Commendation Award from IMarEST in 2016. He is currently the Director of Operations in Marine Technology (Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering) at the Singapore campus. He teaches engineering modules including Internal Combustion Engines and Marine Engineering Design. He was elected into the Council of IMarEST in March 2018
