Description

Public Conversations III with Dr Kevin YL Tan:
"Memory, Identity and the Battle for Our Heritage: A Ringside View"

Saturday, 26 August, 10am-12pm
URA Centre Level 5 Auditorium
45 Maxwell Road

Jointly organised by the Singapore Heritage Society, Singapore Management University (SMU) School of Social Sciences and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)

---

Arm-twisted by friends and former SHS presidents - Dr William Lim and Professor Kwok Kian Woon, Dr. Kevin Tan took over the leadership of the Singapore Heritage Society in 2001. The new but reluctant president had hoped that his tenure would be a brief one, but running the Society was to become almost his "full-time job" for the next 10 years.

Our 3rd Public Conversations takes you behind the scenes to the heady days of the new millennium when Singapore entered a post-materialist era with a renewed sense of loss and a drive to search for one’s roots and identities, cast against the role the Heritage Society played in this process of Singaporeans finding themselves by locating their pasts.

---

Dr. Kevin YL Tan is a legal and historical scholar. From 2001 to 2011, he served as the third President of the Singapore Heritage Society. He is currently Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore and the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University and serves as President of the Singapore National Committee of the International Committee on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

He has written and edited over 40 books on the law, history and politics of Singapore, with his most recent book launched in this July on the life of Puan Noor Aishah, Singapore’s first First Lady.

Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase Dr Kevin Tan's Puan Noor Aishah: Singapore’s First Lady for 20 SGD, a 25% discount off the retail price.
