Event description

Description

We have upped the ante for our NameSake workshops! Join us as we explore our stories through our names and through food! Together, we will have a communal meal with everyone’s BYOV(vegetable), share in one another’s stories, and create beautiful name cards.

Here are the rules:

1. Bring your own vegetable! It could be a vegetable you identify with, your favourite vegetable, or something cheap at the grocers

2. Bring your own bowl and spoon! (Or any food holding apparatus good for soup. This is to minimize waste!)

3. Come prepared to share why you brought said vegetable and about your name!

4. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions!

We will be meeting at Christie Pitts Park at noon! Please remember to RSVP.

See you there or be square!

"What's your name?" is hardly a simple question for many diasporic individuals who are forced to negotiate between a multitude of names and thus, identities. Using names as the point of entry to a process of self and communal exploration, NameSake unpacks some of the meanings, tensions, traumas, and magic that underlie this experience that is inherent to place-making.

NameSake is centred around a workshop series where members of the Asian diasporic community are invited to share their stories, experiences and relationships with their names. Participants will also contribute to the creation of an alternative baby name book (an archive of our multiple names and narratives) and a communal art installation — held at the end of the workshop series. Through these workshops, we will create meaningful spaces and productive art that focus on and explore this critical collective diasporic experience.

Participants will be provided with a collection of reflection questions prior to the workshop date to prompt self-reflection and are invited to share part or wholes of their stories.

This is the SEVENTH of the NameSake workshop series.
