Software Defined Wide Area Network addresses some of the nagging issues of Wide Area Network. It is a new (3 to 4 years old) initiative that leverages the developments in IT Cloud, Networking Function Virtualization, and Software Defined Networking.Current Wide Area Network is dominated by MPLS, Carrier Ethernet, and Broadband technologies. MPLS and Carrier Ethernet offer controlled bandwidth, however they are expensive to purchase, own and operate. Broadband solution is inexpensive; however, it is difficult to control the bandwidth. The current WAN is architected for hub and spokes type traffic and it is not efficient for current traffic patterns like SaaS, VoIP, and AR/VR applications. Lack of control makes it difficult to share the available bandwidth optimally.
Software Defined Wide Area Network offers solutions to address those issues with several migration options. In this presentation we explore this solution space by presenting the component technologies (VM, NFV, Cloud, and SDN) with the focus on NFV and SD-WAN.
