About the programme

In this session conducted in Tamil, discover new perspectives as you engage in a discussion with Vaasagar Vattam book club members on “Squat for Tradition, Sit for Modernity".

The Vaasagar Vattam also know as 'Readers Circle' is a club for those with interest to explore a variety of titles in Tamil. Typically, a particular title will be selected for each session and members will read the book and come prepared for further sharing and discussion. Through these sessions people are encouraged to read a variety of books and get introduced to many local and international authors.

'ஒரு கதை'த் திட்டம் பற்றி

'ஒரு கதை'த் திட்டம் தேசிய நூலக வாரியத்தின் ஒரு முயற்சி. சிங்கப்பூர் எழுத்தாளர்கள் எழுதிய கதைகளை ஒரே நூலில் தமிழ், மலாய், சீனம், ஆங்கிலம் என்று நான்கு மொழிகளிலும் பதிப்பிட்டு, அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவான இலக்கியக் கலந்துரையாடலை உருவாக்க இந்தத் திட்டம் வகைசெய்கிறது. முதலில் எழுதப்பட்ட மொழியைத் தாண்டி மற்ற மொழி வாசகர்களையும் சென்றடைவதே இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் நோக்கமாகும். ‘குந்துதல் வழமை, அமர்ந்தால் புதுமை ’ என்பது சியா ஜூ மிங்கின் சிறுகதையாகும். அது முதலில் சீன மொழியில் எழுதப்பட்டது. இந்த நூலில், அந்தக் கதை நான்கு மொழிகளிலும் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.

எழுத்தாளரைப் பற்றி

1959-ஆம் ஆண்டு சிங்கப்பூரில் பிறந்த சியா ஜூ மிங், 1993-ஆம் ஆண்டில் சிங்கப்பூர்த் தேசியக் கலை மன்றத்தின் இலக்கியத்திற்கான இளம் கலைஞர் விருதைப் பெற்றார். 1995-ல் அயோவா அனைத்துலக எழுத்தாற்றல் நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொள்ள அவருக்கு அழைப்பு வந்தது. 2014-ல், நன்யாங் தொழில்நுட்பப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் சிறப்பு எழுத்தாளராக அவர் நியமிக்கப்பட்டார். 2017-ல் அவருக்குத் தென்கிழக்காசிய எழுத்தாற்றல் விருதும் 2021-ல் கலாசாரப் பதக்கமும் வழங்கப்பட்டன.

இவரது பெயர் "சிங்கப்பூர் சீனக் கலாசாரக் கண்ணோட்டங்களைப் பற்றிய தேடல்களில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் பத்து முக்கியச் சொற்களில் ஒன்று" என்று ஹார்வர்ட் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் கிழக்காசிய மொழிகள், நாகரிகங்கள் பிரிவைச் சேர்ந்த பேராசிரியர் டேவிட் டெர் - வெய் வாங் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார். சியா 11 நூல்களை வெளியிட்டிருக்கிறார். 1996-ல் அவர் New Words of Worldly Tales எனும் நூலுக்காக சிங்கப்பூர்ப் புத்தகப் பரிசை வென்றார். அதோடு, Reconstructing Nanyang, m40, Kian Kok ஆகிய நூல்களுக்கு முறையே 2006, 2010, 2020 ஆகிய ஆண்டுகளில் சிங்கப்பூர் இலக்கியப் பரிசும் பெற்றார். 2016-ல் அவர் எழுதிய Exile or Pursuit நாவல், சிங்கப்பூர் இலக்கியப் பரிசுப் போட்டியில் பாராட்டுப் பரிசைப் பெற்றது.

2016-ல், தைவானிய இலக்கிய சஞ்சிகையின் (Wen Hsun) தலைசிறந்த 20 நாவல்கள் பட்டியலில் m40 நாவல் இடம்பெற்றது (2001–2015). மற்றொரு நாவலான Kian Kok, 2018-ஆம் ஆண்டில் Yazhou Zhoukan-இன் தலைசிறந்த 10 நாவல்கள் பட்டியலில் இடம்பெற்றது. 2018-ல், உயர்நிலைப் பள்ளிகளுக்கான சீன இலக்கியப் பாடநூலாக Exile or Pursuit எனும் நாவலைக் கல்வி அமைச்சு தேர்ந்தெடுத்தது. அந்த நாவலின் ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு 2019-ல் வெளியிடப்பட்டு, 2021-ல் சீன மேடை நாடகமாகப் படைக்கப்பட்டது.

“Squat for Tradition, Sit for Modernity” is a short story by Chia Joo Ming that was originally written in Chinese. This book features the Chinese story, as well as translations of the story in English, Malay and Tamil. This book is part of the project, an effort by the National Library Board to make Singapore short stories – originally written in Chinese, Malay or Tamil – available in all of Singapore’s four official languages. The project aims to bring these stories to readers beyond the language communities that they were originally written for.

About the author

Born in Singapore in 1959, Chia Joo Ming was presented with the Young Artist Award for Literature by the National Arts Council of Singapore in 1993. He was subsequently invited to participate in the Iowa International Writing Program in 1995. In 2014, he was appointed as Writer-in-Residence at Nanyang Technological University. He was conferred the S.E.A Write Award in 2017 and the Cultural Medallion in 2021.

He has been described as “one of the ten keywords of Singapore’s Chinese cultural perspectives” by Professor David Der-Wei Wang, Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University.

Chia has 11 published books. He won the Singapore Book Award in 1996 for New Words of Worldly Tales. He also won the Singapore Literature Prize in 2006, 2010 and 2020 for Reconstructing Nanyang, m40 and Kian Kok respectively. His novel, Exile or Pursuit received a commendation award at Singapore Literature Prize in 2016.

In 2016, Taiwan’s literary magazine (Wen Hsun) put m40 on its list of top 20 novels (2001–15), while Kian Kok was on Yazhou Zhoukan’s list of 2018’s top 10 novels. Exile or Pursuit was selected as a Chinese literature textbook for secondary schools by the Ministry of Education in 2018. An English translation of the novel was published in 2019, and the novel was adapted into a Chinese stage performance in 2021.
