About this Event

About the Programme

Join us virtually to read aloud from One Story: Dharma’s Chariot. Written by award-winning writer Sithuraj Ponraj, Dharma’s Chariot is about Palaniappan, a cloth merchant, who sells a shipment of defective cloth to his old friend Jamal in order to pay the rent for his shop in Arab Street. Jamal had helped him set up his business, and this act of cheating causes Palaniappan to feel guilty. This story traces the rise and fall of small Indian “import and export” businesses in the Market Street and Arab Street areas which prospered in the 70s and 80s, and the gradual decline when technology made their middleman skills obsolete.

About Reading Allowed

Reading Allowed is a monthly book club that meets to read aloud together. Reading aloud is a very special social experience that we'd like to revive. Copies of the text will be available - join us for a fun reading session!
