Singapore Outlook

Equity Strategy 2020: Emerging green shoots?

Trade negotiations and tariffs dominated headlines but, despite the volatility and price fluctuations, global equities had a good run in 2019. The S&P 500 hit a succession of new historic highs as well.

The MSCI World Index also showed the same trend – that gains were broad-based despite rising fears of global economic slowdown. Geopolitical tensions prevailed, but almost all assets – from gold to bonds – piled on gains in the year. We are seeing the emergence of green shoots with improving economic numbers.

The low interest rate environment is likely to be favourable for corporates in the coming quarters, especially for highly geared companies.

Outlook for Hong Kong and the US

The political unrests in Hong Kong continue to cast a gloomy outlook for their economy but market flows may indicate trading opportunities are available.

A quick recap of the 2019 Quarter 3 earnings of the US market and a prelude into the earnings for Quarter 4 will also help you to get a better sense of possibilities in the US.
