About the programme

Zines are back in the limelight again with the recent coverage in mainstream press. The continuing success of the Singapore Art Book Fair shows zines are still alive and kicking in the 21st century. But what is the future of zines? Its vibrancy belies some inherent tensions within the scene and with the form. Does it still embody the DIY spirit, is it still reaching out to the masses or has it become more insular and niche, ie. only speaking to the converted? What does its form and mode of production and distribution say about cost, class, causes and its continued relevance as a vehicle for change, personal voice and commitment?

This programme is for participants aged 16 years old and above.

About the speakers

CT Lim writes about history and popular culture in Singapore. He used to write for BigO and other zines, consumed Factsheet Five in pre-internet days and would use the school photocopying machine to make his own zines.

Renée Ting is the director of the Singapore Art Book Fair, an annual multi-day festival specialising in contemporary art books and zines. She is also the founder of Thing Books, an online bookshop that focuses on artists’ books, zines and self-published printed matte

About the series
