Public Talk - Vocabulary Instruction: The Power of Words
Thu 20 October 2016, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM Singapore Standard Time Singapore Time
Ever dread boring vocabulary instruction? Or wonder about how to improve your students’ vocabulary?
A rich vocabulary supports learning about the world, encountering new ideas and enjoying the beauty of language. Not surprisingly, vocabulary has strong links to reading comprehension and oral expression - the more words you know, the better you understand texts and the more accurately you can say what you want to say.
However, explicit vocabulary instruction is often neglected or ineffectively taught in the classroom. Certainly, many of us have memories of being a student, not knowing what a particular word meant, and being handed a dictionary and asked to ‘look it up’.
This public talk will cover the importance of effective vocabulary and give you some fun and engaging strategies for making vocabulary learning ‘stick’.
Who should attend:
Teachers, tutors or parents who are interested in vocabulary instruction
This talk will be conducted in English and is not suitable for children
