Event Details

Quantum computing is an emerging field of computing which possesses an enormous near-term potential for transforming various fields, such as quantum chemistry, beyond the current capabilities of classical computing. Several academic and industrial laboratories have already performed pioneering studies on quantum chemical systems with quantum devices and this technology will become more important to quantum chemists as the field matures.

During this session, the team will speak on some of these exciting advancements in Quantum Chemistry followed by a discussion on Machine Learning for Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices with Qiskit.

Join us as IBM Q highlights the latest advances in the field of quantum computing with an emphasis on recent efforts in quantum chemistry. IBM Q will also showcase current capabilities and highlight the software and chemistry concerns to outline the promises and challenges that remain for this field.

Speakers' Profiles:

Gavin Jones, Research Staff Member in Computational Chemistry, IBM Research Almaden


Dr. Jones is currently a Research Staff Member in the Quantum Applications in Chemistry and Science group at IBM Research - Almaden. He is a computational chemist with interests in catalysis, molecular properties, the formation of functional advanced material, polymer degradation and quantum chemistry with quantum computers.


Dr. Jones completed his Ph. D. in theoretical/computational organic chemistry at the University of California Los Angeles, prior to his postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Jones joined IBM Research in 2010 as a postdoctoral researcher and became a Research Staff Member in 2013. Dr. Jones has received an Outstanding Technical Achievement Award from IBM and was awarded an FP Global Thinkers Award: Innovator Category by Foreign Policy Magazine for his achievements in sustainability and recycling. 

Rudy Raymond H.P., Research Staff Member, IBM Research Tokyo


Dr. Rudy Raymond is a Research Staff Member of IBM Research - Tokyo and currently a member of Quantum Algorithms and Software group, whose mission is to enhance Qiskit, an open-source framework for quantum information science. Dr. Rudy has broad skills in Algorithms, Machine Learning/AI and Optimization with more than 50 scientific papers published in prestigious international conferences and journals. Prior to joining IBM in 2006, he received his Doctor of Informatics from Graduate School of Informatics of Kyoto University, where his doctoral work focused on the study of quantum query complexity and quantum network coding.
