In the world of IsLand Bar, meet your host who will serve a signature cocktail, a political concoction of island histories and realities. IsLand Bar brings together voices from different places, practices to share their micro context within global interactions. Through a situational performance, you are invited to drink and re-think about the origins of cultural and social identities; the notion of home, displacement and care through an activation of your senses.

IsLand Bar is an open-source project first initiated as an experiment in ADAM* 2017 and commissioned in Taipei Arts Festival 2018 led by principal artists Scarlet Yu (Hong Kong/Germany), Chikara Fujiwara (Japan) and Lee Ming-Chen (Taiwan).

ila’s IsLand: (i)-TU (45min, 7 participants per session)

In 2034, the world is wrought by a new strand of contagion, mùqì-387 that does not allow for human and non-human beings to come into physical contact with one another for long periods. Any contact would result in contamination and symptoms such as memory loss, failure to feel emotions and will eventually lead to death. As the contagion affects the brain and the nervous system, it has been impossible for us to come up with a vaccine.

(i)-TU is a treatment session that combines niat (intention) and lupa (land) to regenerate and regulate the senses through slow meditations of sense and memory work. Participants will be invited to awaken the dormant affected areas of their brain starting with individual rumination and into collective exercises involving smelling, tasting, and time travel.

Jereh’s IsLand: The tortoise, the rabbit and the cat

Situated in the basement of The Substation, the SAD Bar is where the heart beats; the pipes creak; a space that holds the moment right before a performer goes onstage; a storeroom that houses the numerous props that went through the theatre doors.

With a meditative gaze, Jereh invites you to travel between real time and history of the building, where time is momentarily suspended. Taking in the breath and sound of the space, each ingredient becomes the essence for the final consummation of the drink.

Norhaizad’s IsLand: KorangOke?

Karaoke is closely related to one of our basic human desires which is to feel connected. Much like the Beloved Substation, it functions as a celebration, therapy, escapism and bonding. In this IsLand Bar, join Norhaizad Adam in his silent karaoke session to perform a serenade in honour of the Substation. With a special cocktail recipe that is inspired by Article 152 from the Singapore Constitution, he hopes to recognise and sympathise with the special position of Singaporean artists.

Scarlet’s IsLand: you and me and we kueh lapis

Layers and layers of collective memory. Who cares? Take me into your bloodstream, taste it and spit it onto the soil we share. How does a public space become a home of something for someone? Learn the move from the dancing Kueh Lapis, take the dancefloor of the six feet under. Let time be our navigator among the trees and the mosquito.

Zarina’s IsLand: Girls and Ghosts in Trees

Girls and Ghosts in Trees was first presented as part of Survey: Space, Sharing, Haunting, organised by The Substation and curated by Post-Museum in 2016. In this revised and updated 2021 iteration, we will revisit various spectral forms, trees older than our buildings, stories on territory, terror, time, detritus and talismans, alongside disembodied historical imprints that haunt our archipelagic imagination.
