Description

Join us as we hear from the perspectives of 3 radiographers on topics that affect us.

Challenges faced by trainee MRI Radiographers (Muhd. Ashraf): The need for capable MRI radiographers continues to rise, to cater to the ever-increasing demand for the advanced diagnostic imaging modality. Prospective MRI radiographers are inducted into their departments and conventionally undergo experiential training; being integrated as staff and learning by handling real-life cases. Trainees are expected to acquire and improve their clinical skills while maintaining the department’s efficacy. This talk aims to explore and reflect upon the common challenges faced by trainee MRI radiographers in an archetypal hospital environment.

  • Learning Objectives: This talk provides insights into common obstacles that trainee MRI radiographers face while striving towards competency in their modality, as well as recommendations on how to overcome such challenges, should other radiographers face them in their own setting

Surviving CT Boot Camp (Sherman Tan): Embarking onto a new phase in your radiography career can be an exciting and daunting experience. There is only so much you can do to better prepare yourself to start developing new advanced radiographic skills. Your expectations are only limited to what we can see from the other side and only by keeping a clear and open mind, you can then overcome the giants that await you. Being in an ever changing and face-paced environment, keeping focused and adaptable are some of the many traits you will develop as you work your way up becoming a competent CT radiographer. No doubt you will face challenges that can even bewilder the brightest of minds but take each learning opportunity to sharpen your skills and put them to practice. When bootcamp is done and dusted, your journey in an exciting clinical learning adventure has only just begun.

  • Learning Objectives: Understand the role of CT in the hospital setting and the role of CT radiographers. This talk also allows one to identify learning expectations before commencement of training and the challenges faced as a new trainee

CT Coronary scan for patients in EDTU (Marcus Tan): Early detection of potentially life-threatening diseases often leads to early interventions and treatment plans, thus yielding improved treatment outcome and quality of life for patients. CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is an imaging test that evaluates the coronary arteries for any anomalies that can lead to chest pain and other symptoms. Yet, despite the high diagnostic values of CTCA as shown from literature reviews, CTCA is not readily available and remains a challenging procedure as the scan is often dependent on both technical and patient-related factors. A new initiative was introduced in our institution to allow CTCA be performed routinely for patients who are admitted to the Extended Diagnostic Treatment Unit (EDTU) in the emergency department. Preliminary data so far have shown positive outcomes, with patients getting quicker diagnosis and interventions, as well as reducing unnecessary admission rates for patients whose scans show little or no risk to CAD.

  • Learing Objectives: Sharing of new initiative that can lead to early detection of CAD and aids in reducing unnecessary admissions to wards.

CPD Updates (Azizah Mohd. Afif, SSR Academic Chairperson): Stay updated with the latest in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for radiographers and radiation therapists in Singapore.

Dinner is served at 6.30pm, talk commences at 7pm.

1 SSR CPD point accredited per participant.
