About the European Research Council (ERC)

The ERC encourages the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding. It supports investigator-driven frontier research across all fields.

ERC grants are awarded through open competition to projects headed by starting and established researchers, irrespective of their origins, who are working or moving to work in Europe. The sole criterion for selection is scientific excellence. The aim here is to recognise the best ideas, and confer status and visibility on the best brains.

In the past 10 years, the ERC has awarded research grants worth nearly 11 billion euros to almost 7,000 scientists and scholars from all over the world, both early-career and senior researchers, carrying out their ambitious research projects in all scientific disciplines.

The following grant schemes are available.

  • Starting Grant (up to €1.5 Million for 5 years) for researchers 2-7 years after award of PhD.

  • Consolidator Grant (up to €2 Million for 5 years) for researchers 7-12 years after award of PhD.

  • Advanced Grant (up to €2.5 Million for 5 years) for established research leaders.

  • Synergy Grant (up to €10 Million for 6 years) for a group of 2-4 researchers
