About the Programme
Set in the Victorian era, Far from the Madding Crowd follows the spirited Bathsheba Everdene as she moves to the town of Weatherbury upon inheriting a large farm on the estate. There, she attracts the attention of three very different men: farmer William Boldwood, soldier Sergeant Troy, and shepherd Gabriel Oak. The men complicate Bathsheba’s life in contrasting ways, which causes tragedy and jeopardises the stability of the community. The novel masterfully depicts how swift passion and slow courtship collide, and is further complemented by evocative descriptions of rural life and landscapes.
