Description

The Right To Decide

Mr. T, a 67 year old Chinese gentleman was admitted for infective exacerbation of chronic obstructive lung disease. His background medical history included ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke and dementia. He was treated with intravenous antibiotics. The speech therapist reviewed him and deemed oral feeding to be unsafe, recommending nasogastric tube feeding instead. Unfortunately, Mr. T does not have the capacity to make decision on nasogastric tube insertion due to dementia.

This is a common scenario in the healthcare practice.

Please join us in this session as we discuss decision-making in this setting, exploring the role of substitute decision-makers (Lasting Power of Attorney, nominated healthcare spokesperson, Court-appointed Deputy) and the use of Advance Care Planning (ACP).

Lunch reception would be provided from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm and the session would commence at 1:00 pm.
