About the play:

This play marks a return to a style of theatre I have long been enamoured of, perhaps best described as ‘magic realism’. The term was first used in the art world by the German critic Franz Roh (1925) and typically refers to the coexistence of the the real and the fantastical, the natural and the supernatural, the normal and the magical worlds. It also provides me an opportunity to dig into my German roots through the tales of the Brothers Grimm.

“The Secret in the Wings” confronts the complex fears of childhood with striking immediacy. The journey from once-upon-a-time to happily-ever-after is never easy. The dark essence of fairy tales seems to have been hiding in plain sight all along, much like the Ogre's tail. We're not here to turn fairy tales into human dramas, but rather to see them in all their alienness and incomprehensibility.

The gloomy basement is an evocative setting for the collective id, where unnamed fears gather. Jumbles of old furniture huddle in the corners, the better to cast ghoulish shadows. A pile of sand spills in, representing the menacing force of the natural world, which plays a supporting role in several tales.

The seven stories told here are rooted in dark places - adultery, betrayal, infanticide, incest, death. They affirm the perils inherent in all himan relationships and the arbitrary nature of even the most solid emotional bonds. The evening is constructed as a long tunnel in which darkness masses and accumulates, before it is gradually and finally dispersed in cathartic waves of magic and reconciliation. We hope that the energy and humour of the staging make this an entertaining and delightful show, one that is at once sweet and scary, silly and poignant.
