About the Programme/Event

Digital technology has transformed reading and play. The ubiquitous screen now mediates between once familiar activities of reading and play. Reading on screen is an increasingly popular phenomenon in today’s digital age. Is reading on screen the same as reading in print? Does the medium make a difference? As a reader, what should you be mindful of when you read on screen? A plethora of educational apps available today promises that young children can learn through digital play. Are they hype or do they help? How can these apps for learning be used meaningfully between caregiver and child?

In this talk, Dr Victor Lim Fei will discuss the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital nature of reading and play. He will describe the (new) literacies in digital reading for the reader today and discuss how caregivers can be guided in evaluating and using apps for young children’s literacy development.
